Happy Valentine's Day!!

One of our traditions is to heart attack the kitchen for FHE.

We did this last week and face timed Kenzie so she

could participate. I love seeing the hearts on the

cupboards and all the sweet, sincere sentiments.

The kids have their gifts waiting for them on the

island when they come down in the morning.

Scott gave Jensen flowers before he left town.

I have an addiction with Pinterest.

I found this idea for Scott's gift there.

It turned out fabulous!

I am excited for him to open it tomorrow

while he is away.

The cards came with the aged look.

I added a little extra brown ink,

and the 52 reasons.

So fun!

I love to give a homemade gift...

from the heart!

I am not a fan of a box of chocolates.

So when I saw this idea it was

perfect for Alec.

I bought a heart box of chocolates (on sale).

Dumped the chocolates, put in new liners

and $.

Such a great gift for anyone!

Love has found its way to our home.

Martha Stewart has a beautiful

wreath on the cover of her magazine.

This was my rendition of her wreath.

I LOVE how it turned out!

Using the same tissue paper technique,

I created a Puff Ball to hang

above the kitchen table.

So Fun!

I love to fill my apothecary jars with

various goodies. Found a darling

subway print on Pinterest, and

made a large tissue paper Puff.

A week ago I received in the mail the new

URBAN DECAY NAKED 2

eyeshadow palette.

I loved the first one and was curious

and excited to see how they could top it.

The shadows come in a tin case.

Which is reminiscent of days long ago.

Think tin pencil cases.

The shadows come in a great variety

of shimmers, glitter and matte.

The colors are mainly in

the taupe and greige tones.

I have enjoyed using them as mix and match,

eye shadows and eye liners.

The brush is fabulous!

A dual ended brush perfect

for lining or blending.

It also came with a little lip gloss.

I ordered mine from Sephora and

was told it would shortly sell out.

It is a little pricey, but you get a lot

of bang for your buck.

This is one palette that I can take

traveling and have it do everything

that I would need.

I love multi-functional make up.

This is definately a HIT in my book!

Rather than think of spiritual life as a separate room, let’s think of it as paint on the walls of all the rooms, or maybe a scent I the air that drifts through the whole house – the way the fragrance of spaghetti sauce or baking bread has a way of drifting through all the rooms of the house becoming part of the air we breathe. Our spiritual lives should be our lives, not just a separate part of our lives.

Suppose the Savior were to come to visit you. You’ve rushed around and vacuumed the guest room, put the best sheets on the bed, even placed some tulips in a vase on the dresser. Jesus looks around the room and says, “Oh thank you for inviting me into your home. Please tell me about your life.”

You say, “I will In just a minute, but something’s boiling over on the stove, and I also need to let the cat outside,”

By the time you get back to the room where Jesus is waiting patiently, you’re so tired that you can barely keep your eyes open, let alone sit worthifully at his feet waiting for words of profound wisdom and spiritual power to wash over you, to make you different, to make everything else different, and you fall asleep whispering, “I’m sorry. I’ll try to do better. I’m so sorry.”

How we pour guilt over ourselves!

This isn’t the gospel. We know that on some level Jesus experienced the totality of mortal existence in Gethsemane. It’s our faith that he experienced everything – absolutely everything. Sometimes we don’t think through the implications of that belief. We talk in great generalities about the sins of all humankind, about the suffering of the entire human family. But we don’t experience pain in generalities. We experience it individually. That means Jesus knows what it felt like when your mother died of cancer – how it was for your other, how it still is for you. He knows what it felt like to lose the student-body election. He knows that moment when the brakes locked, and the car started to skid. He experienced the slave ship sailing from Ghana toward Virginia. He experienced the gas chambers at Dachau. He experienced napalm in Vietnam. He knows about drug addiction and alcoholism.

There is nothing you have experienced as a woman that he does not know and recognize. On a profound level, he understands about pregnancy and giving birth. He knows about PMS and cramps and menopause. He understands about rape and infertility and abortion.

His last recorded words to his disciples were, “And, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (Matthew 28:20.) What does that mean? It means he understands your mother-pain when your five-year-old leaves for kindergarten, when a bully picks on your fifth-grader, when your daughter calls to say that the new baby has Down’s syndrome. He knows your mother-rage when a trusted babysitter sexually abuses your two-year-old, when someone gives your thirteen-year-old drugs, when someone seduces your seventeen-year-old. He knows the pain you live with when you come home to a quiet apartment where the only children who ever come are visitors, when you hear that your former husband and his new wife were sealed in the temple last week, when your fiftieth wedding anniversary rolls around and your husband has been dead for two years. He knows all that. He’s been there. He’s been lower than all that.

So do you really think you’re shielding him by keeping the door closed while you’re throwing paper plates on the table and sending Chrissie off to wash her hands for the second time? Do you really think he doesn’t know? Doesn’t understand! Wouldn’t laugh and help?

But he’ll stay in that room if you put him there.

Twenty-two years ago on a snowy morning

in Boise, Idaho...two young kids were married

for all eternity.

Marrying Scott was the best decision I have ever made!

As we celebrate "22" years of marriage,

it is hard to believe. It does not seem

that we have been married for that long.

Those twenty-two years have produced

3 beautiful children, countless memories,

good times and bad, but most of all

our love has grown leaps and bounds

over the years.

Scott is truly my rock!

My number one supporter, my biggest fan,

and the love of my life!

Motto for 2012

As I pondered what my word/motto for 2012 should be...

I reflected on the last couple of years.

They were full of many ups and downs, changes,

growing pains, and numerous changes on the horizon.

Some good, some bad and some bittersweet.

I find it difficult to adapt to change.

It is not in my genetic make-up to welcome change.

I have to dig deep and work hard to welcome change.

I am also one who likes to be in control.

I like things how I like them.

It is hard to not have things on my time line.

As we sent Kenzie off to college,

Scott commuting for 1 year, preparing to

relocate, challenges with Kenzie's health,

helping the kids and myself come to terms

with leaving Arizona, new church callings,

the last Christmas in our house, travel adventures...

I would find myself worrying and stressing more.

It is clear to me that I need to exercise my "Faith."

I must step forward and rely on my Heavenly Father.

President Gordon B. Hinckley is my inspiration...

As I move forward with "Faith",

I will remind myself every step of the way...

"It will all work out!"

New York City!

A month ago I was

lucky to take a whirlwind

trip with Scott again to NY.

My 3rd in 8 months.

Beware...lots of photos!

fashion shoot on the street corner.

It was cold that morning

and she had very little on.

This shoot lasted all day.

I was too early in the month for

Christmas decorations and windows.

They had the inside of the store decorated.

Boy, was it beautiful!

Central Park with all the

fall colors.

I am so enamored with this City.

I will drop everything for a

couple days in New York.

I love the hustle and bustle,

walking everywhere, food,

shopping is amazing and

the energy the city puts out

is so fun!

Thanksgiving

My family is so helpful, hard working and fun!

The Christmas decorations are up!!

Pies and cranberry sauce are made

and all is under control for the big feast.

I am thankful for my amazing husband and children.

For the beautiful home we live in.

The travel adventures we are able to have.

For the support, love, and friendship of fabulous friends.

But, most of all I am so grateful to be a member of

Nutcracker Tea

This year we didn't think Jensen would

have a part at the Nutcracker Tea.

However, she was asked to dress

as Clara's mother.

It was an honor for her.

Jensen and her dance buddies.

They have danced together for the

last 8 1/2 years.

Not only did Jensen get to dress as Clara's mother.

She introduced the dancers and

read the Nutcracker story to all the kids

in attendance.

The Nutcracker has been a big part of our lives

since she was 8.

It was bittersweet as we said goodbye.

Thankful Tree

Every year we make our "Thankful Tree."

This year was a little more difficult.

Kenzie is away at college, Scott has been traveling,

and so that left the three of us to carry on.

We did call Kenzie and Scott to get a few of

their Thankful items.

It is hanging in the kitchen as a constant

reminder on what this time of year

is all about.

Hopefully we will be able to remember

all year long to be Thankful and show

gratitude for all that we have.

I love this time of year!

Kenzie comes home tonight, short school week,

yummy food for Thanksgiving, family,

Holiday decorations are going up as I type

(I know I am crazy).

First Day of School

The first day of school came and went.

But, I must document it.

Jensen started her Senior year of High School.

Even though she is technically a Junior,

due to the upcoming move she is

graduating a year early.

She is not too happy about that,

but is handling it beautifully!

WOW! I can't believe she will be graduating.

So many changes!

She is such a fun, pretty and amazing young lady!!

Alec started 6th grade.

He does not like me taking his pictures.

It seems like only yesterday that I was taking

him to Kindergarten.

This year it was not cool for Scott and I

to walk him on to the playground.

Although, he let Kenzie.

Oh, to be a big sister!!

He is very involved with school this year.

VP of Student Council, Service Club and

early morning choir.

He loves his school!

He is riding his bike to school...

that is when he doesn't have to be

there early.

Loves to hang with his friends.

They have great air soft battles at the park.

He is becoming a fabulous young man

and we couldn't be more proud of him.

It won't be long and he will be taller

than his sisters and me.

My little boy is quickly becoming

a young man!

There are days that I sit and contemplate life....

I can't believe that I will be relocating in 9 months,

that my husband is gone a greater part of the week,

that simple family things are harder to do or missed,

that I have a daughter in college, one getting ready to

graduate High School and my baby is in 6th grade!

Disappointment and discouragement are from Satan!

Oh, boy he wants us to feel them and lately I have

felt my own share of them.

Last week it was if a light bulb went off.

I was ready, able and willing to carry on this crazy life and load.

I no longer wanted the heavy feelings that Satan was

putting on me. Adios!!

I am truly blessed!!

No matter the hardship, my blessings far outweigh them!

I love this quote from a great Prophet (info here).

I am not sure what facilitated the change last week.

I do know that somewhere someone said a prayer

or two on my behalf, friends supported and uplifted,

and I felt the spirit awaken my soul.

It is a new week with new and old challenges.

I will "Carry On".

For now this is my path.

It is up to me to learn, grow, Be Happy, Believe

and endure.

Big Brother

Alec adopted a "big brother."

Tanner is a young man from our ward.

He is currently serving a mission

in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Tanner was Kenzie's friend first

and then Alec decided that

Tanner could be the "big brother"

he never got.

Alec has been enamored with writing

Tanner while he is serving his mission.

Alec updates him on sports, video games,

school and life in Gilbert.

I love that Tanner is such a great

example to Alec.

I Will Never Forget

It was one of those moments....

I will always remember where I was,

what I was doing and what was

happening across the United States.

I will Never Forget that day and

the days that followed,

as we sat glued to the TV.

The memorial in New York is

a gorgeous site.

I can't wait to see it in person

in one month.

This weekend Scott and I were in Walnut Creek, Ca. His sweet Grandma passed away.

We all called her GGma.

She lived a full life...95 years old.

All the handsome grandsons and grandson-in laws were pallbearer's.

GGma loved the color pink.

She was a fabulous lady.

Always made sure she had her lipstick on and nails polished.

When you would visit her she would make sure to treat you

to sourdough bread and homemade jam.

She loved to send birthday cards and always wanted to

know what was happening in your life.

She will be missed, but oh how happy she must be

to be reunited with her husband and other family members.

ALERT....extreme crankiness

Record yesterday....114!

What?! In late August. You have to be kidding.

The kiddos can't have recess, the pool is 96,

both our AC's quit working, so that made it

90 upstairs and 87 downstairs.

UGHHH!!

Hence, the Extreme Crankiness.

They say it is a dry heat.

Who cares! It is way too hot for anything!

Boys are trying to have football practice...crazy.

There is nothing pleasant about this weather.

We have had a heat warning all week and they

have now extended it through Friday night.

Gotta love AZ this time of year!

~Change~

In life it is inevitable that there will be change.

I do not like change nor do I adapt well to change.

That makes this past year hard...real hard!

We have had LOTS of changes and we

are still having LOTS of changes.

For the past month we have spent a lot of

time in discussion, prayer and fasting with Jensen.

Jensen came to a cross road in July.

She was reevaluating life and choices.

With moving looming in the not too distant future,

Jensen was beginning to realize how much life

was already changing.

This week Jensen decided that she was done

doing ballet on a pre-professional level.

Last night she informed Ballet Etudes

that she would not be returning.

Not an easy decision...

especially since she has been dancing

at this level since she was 8 years old.

It saddens me that we will not

get to see her dance in another

Ballet Etudes production.

This has been such a huge part

of our lives for a very long time.

Ballet Etudes has been a second family to Jensen.

It is a hard transition to make.

I feel as if a hole has been left.

I know Jensen will miss expressing herself

through ballet, her ballet friends and teachers

and most of all performing!

But, at this time this will allow her

time to adapt to moving, time with friends

and not being so VERY busy.

This is her Senior year and we all

know how busy it is being a senior in High School.

So we bid a fond farewell to ballet

and all that it brought into our lives.

Who knows what is in store for Jensen.

I am proud of her and how she went about

making this difficult decision.

Her ability to discuss it with Scott and I

and going to Sharon to inform her of her decision.

Very mature and responsible.

Thank you to everyone who has supported

Jensen through her ballet endeavors...

friends, family, ward members, teachers

and Ballet Etudes.

This year Alec got two birthday celebrations.

Scott had to fly to London on his actual birthday.

So, we celebrated all weekend long.

On his actual birthday with

that his sisters gave him.

His sisters died that he got a

I guess it pays to be the youngest

Happy Birthday

Alec!

Alec is not a little boy any longer.

Today he turns 11!

WOW!!

He has become a handsome young man

and is getting taller by the minute.

Alec loves to play board games, video games, card games; basically

any type of game.

Alec is tender hearted.

Alec is always the first one to give hugs and say "I love you."

He is very smart and learning comes easy to him.

Alec is the jokester/prankster at the house.
Alec is very close to his sisters.
He is very aware when I have a bad day or need help.
He loves to teach our FHE lessons.
Alec gives great talks at school or church.
Alec loves basketball!
He loves to go to the movies or snuggle in at home and watch one.
He wishes he had a younger sibling.
He is very responsible.
Alec loves to read books and reads them very quickly.
Alec is caring and compassionate.

Alec is the only boy at our house and the caboose.
His sisters have adored him from the get-go.
Alec, you are an amazing young man!

Leaving the nest

The time has come for Kenzie to "leave the nest."

We have been running around town getting

everything for her apartment, packing up her room

and doing last minute crafts.

I have been soaking up every minute that I can

with this AMAZING young woman!

Man, will I miss her!!

I can't believe how time flew by.

Kenzie has done incredible things in

the year since she graduated High School.

This week she completed her

Associates Degree.

Yes, sir! She did it in 1 year!

AMAZING!!

Friday we head out in her little SUV

for BYU!

Wish us luck and

think of me as I spend the next

6 days in tears as

my little girl goes out on her own.

Happy Birthday mother dearest!!!!!

In order to say happy birthday to our wonderful mom, we hacked her blog to say how much we love and appreciate her. Even though it is not her 29th birthday (more like 42nd!) like the title says, she is super fun to hang out with and gets along well with her 2 teenage kids! We love how willing she is to help with anything. You name it, and she will try her hardest to do it! Madre is creative beyond belief and the best with school projects or any other possible craft she can get her hands on. She is supportive of everything we do, and encourages us to fight hard and keep going when things get tough. We love her and the things she does to keep the family strong, and the great spritual rock she is in this family. I think it goes without saying that you rock mom!!! We love you lots. What a big day at our house!

Kenzie is 18 today!!

We thought it would be a long time

before she became 18 and

here we are.

How quickly the time flew!

Kenzie is a beautiful young woman.

She has strong convictions that

She loves being with her family.

This weekend brought March Madness. Each of us fills out a bracket and we keep track of points. The winner gets to be "King or Queen" for a day. Needless to say the whole family watches game after game. It is crazy at our house.

this recipe is easy and delicious!

Baked Creamy Chicken Taquitos Adapted by OurBestBites.com

1/3 C (3 oz) cream cheese

1/4 C green salsa

1T fresh lime juice

1/2 t cumin1 t chili powder

1/2 t onion powder

1/4 t granulated garlic

3 T chopped cilantro

2 T sliced green onions

2 C shredded cooked chicken

1 C grated Monterey jack cheese

small corn tortillas or flour tortillas or even wheat

kosher salt

cooking spray

Heat oven to 425. Line a baking sheet with foil and lightly coat with cooking spray.

Heat cream cheese in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds so it's soft and easy to stir.

Add green salsa, lime juice, cumin, chili powder, onion powder and granulated garlic. Stir to combine and then add cilantro and green onions.

Add chicken and cheese and combine well.You can prepare up to this step ahead of time. Just keep the mixture in the fridge.

Work with a few tortillas at a time and heat in the microwave until they are soft enough to roll without cracking. It helps to place them between damp paper towels. Usually 20-30 seconds will do it. If you find yours are cracking when you roll them or come unrolled right away, just try heating them longer and try the paper towel thing.

Place 2-3 T of chicken mixture on the lower third of a tortilla, keeping it about 1/2 inch from the edges. Then roll it up as tight as you can.Place seam side down on the baking sheet. Lay all of the taquitos on the baking sheet and make sure they are not touching each other. Spray the tops lightly with cooking spray or an oil mister and sprinkle some kosher salt on top.

Place pan in oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until crisp and the ends start to get golden brown.

Snow in Gilbert?

for the briefest moment yesterday...it did indeed snow in Gilbert, Arizona. Crazy! Right? as we sat in church yesterday morning, Kenzie and I in Relief Society looked out the window and watched as the storm became slushy snow. it lasted only a couple of minutes before turning into hail and then into rain.

i was wishing i had my phone or camera with me. all the ladies in the room were trying to catch a glimpse of this monumental moment. in the 11 years that i have lived here, never has it snowed in Gilbert. the poor lady teaching had no clue that everyone was fixated on that window and not listening one bit to her lesson. it was a great lesson, but snow was exciting and new!

i know i have no proof...other than a room full of ladies that saw and Kenzie who went outside to stand in it. it proves that you never know what can or will happen. life is crazy, unpredictable and full of new adventures. who knows when snow will hit Gilbert again? not anytime soon! yesterday temp's were in the 50's, today is in the 60's and later this week we will be 80. packing away the sweaters and bringing out the shorts and the flip flops. gotta love spring in Arizona!

It is official...

Mackenzie has been accepted into the

Elementary Education Department at BYU!

She starts April 26th

and will graduate December 2012.

I can't believe my girl is leaving home.

It is happening so fast and I don't

feel ready to let her go.

have I taught her everything, can she cook,

do laundry and most importantly

can she fend off all the eager boys!

What an exciting time for her.

Today the resident ballerina and I head out on

a mother/daughter trip.

We are headed to see her friend perform

as Cinderella.

We will also see Ballet West's

production of Sleeping Beauty.

In addition to these great performances,

Jensen will get to attend a ballet class

with BYU ballet...a dream come true.

And on Saturday she will audition

for Ballet West Summer Intensive.

WOW! What a weekend!

The only problem is I am not ready

to embrace the cold. Brrrrrr!

heads home for the week.

as i sat reflecting the other evening i was truly in awe at the numerous tender mercies that we have been blessed by. my family and i are so blessed. i am trying this year to be more aware of all that is around me. this should help me in showing gratitude, serving others and counting my blessings. here are just a few of the tender mercies that we have been blessed by....

~an amazing education advisor at BYU has taken an interest in Kenzie and opened all sorts of doors and made it possible for Kenzie to attend in April.

~a good friend was able to adopt her 2nd child due to an incredible woman. both these women inspire me. their strength, faith and patience is incredible.

~doors are being opened for jensen to pursue her love of dance at BYU.

~after much prayer, temple attendance and fasting, Scott was able to obtain an awesome job.

my little family is continually being watched over, protected and blessed. although there are times we may not understand life, there is always a reason life takes the path it does.

there are times when it is hard to understand, but with faith we can carry on.

2010 had a lot of twists and turns for me.

My motto of "I Can Do Hard Things" was

certainly put to the test.

With the recent changes in our life...I was searching

and pondering what I should focus on for 2011.

This simple theme kept coming to my mind....

Keep

Calm

Carry

2011 brings an array of changes in the Smith household.

I will be a single parent for half of each week,

Kenzie will move away in April,

Jensen will turn 16 and work to accelerate graduation,

Alec will need extra attention with his dad gone so much

and each month we will get closer to relocating to Utah.

I will need to remain CALM, positive and strong.

Because, "I Can Do Hard Things!"

I greet this new year with a little apprehension.

Change is hard for me and I am unsure

what else lies ahead.

It is a little like driving a winding, mountain road with

a lot of twists and turns.

You are never quite certain what will be around

the next bend.

What a great week we had last week.

We made a trip to see the Temple Lights.

Christmas Eve we had Scott's family over.

My cute nephew Ryan LOVES my rolls.

After checking out stockings and Santa gifts,

We have had a lot great bonding.

This is the last year with all of us under the same roof.

Now, one is getting ready to leave the nest,

another one is preparing to graduate High School

and one will be finishing elementary in a year and a half.

I don't know if I am ready for all of this change.

it seems that my motto for the year "I can DO hard things" was truly inspired. as i have overcome personal, physical and emotional challenges this year, there was one challenge left to conquer. in November as i was dealing with my sadness and grief with being released from yw's, my husband was busy looking for new employment opportunities. one day a recruiter called him with great interest. 2 weeks later there was a job offer...not just one, but there were 2 others as well. 3 in all!

unfortunately none of these opportunities were in arizona. we had some lengthy conversations, emotional moments, stressful times, anxiety, peaceful visits to the temple and HUGE decisions to make over the Thanksgiving holiday. as options were weighed, the answer was obvious. HERE WE COME UTAH!!

scott has taken a job with adobe in utah. now comes the crazy part...he will commute 3 days a week for a year and then for 6 months he will be in utah 4-5 days a week. this week was the start of our new crazy life. i will be adjusting to single parenting and scott will be adjusting to living at my parents. many have asked why we are doing this. this will allow jensen to graduate high school early as a junior and alec will be able to finish 6th grade. the company is willing to allow scott to do this and we felt our kids would transition easier at these stages.

i never thought i would be moving back to utah. this came as a complete shock and i am still adjusting to the idea. scott is thrilled and has a great job with adobe. i am excited for his career and so proud of him. it is with great sadness that our family prepares to tell arizona goodbye. we love it here and call it home. alec was born here and has never lived anywhere else. he has no idea what is in store for him. this kid is use to wearing flip flops and shorts in december. oh, boy!

once again i find myself saying..."i can DO hard things." this truly is a hard thing. this year has taken its toll on me. november was quite the roller coaster ride and there are still some moments when the tears flow. through it all i have learned so much about myself, become stronger, leaned on my heavenly father, gained an appreciation for regular temple attendance and realized that i can do hard things!

there is a reason we need to be back in utah. it will be a challenging year and a half for our family as scott commutes, we get closer to leaving az and the kids and i learn to be on our own. i now know that i needed to be released from my calling because my family needs me now.

what a year it has been! i never imagined that 2010 would end this way and our life would be taking us on this new journey. for now it is time to enjoy my little family, christmas and our time home together.

as i left church today... i left something behind. it was a huge part of me. i have a broken heart, a gaping hole and an overall sadness. today i was released from my calling. this was something i was not prepared for or even expected. it was a complete shock! i have served for the last 4 1/2 years in our young women's program. i have LOVED every minute of it.

the association with the girls and leaders. fun activities, spiritual lessons, making friendships and new experiences are just a few of the highlights. every sunday and wednesday i would be with these girls and leaders. what to do now?

i loved and enjoyed serving them, being there for them, watching them grow and mature, learning from them and having each and every one of them in my life. i have shed so many tears...my eyes burn and my head aches.

i know i am not defined by my calling. at the same time it was such a big part of me and my life. i don't remember life before young women's. my family has been a great comfort to me. alec said he would bake me a cake and that is what he did. chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and a "we love you" on top. fresh cinnamon rolls from my good friend and a date with my husband on my first wednesday without young women's.

and so begins a new chapter. i will spend time with kenzie getting her ready for byu in april, bond with alec while he still likes to spend time with me and be there for jensen in between all of her activities. i am so thankful for such supportive friends and family. although they may not understand the depth of my sadness, they are doing all they can to support.

one never knows what life has in store. my goal of "i can do hard things" has worn me out. little did i know that i would be challenged continually this year. i am grateful for the opportunity i had to serve and that i was able to be in there with my daughters. life moves forward and so must i.

i bid a fond farewell to all my young women and friends. cherished memories i will carry with me. here is to a new adventure and a healing heart.

tender mercies

Last Thursday my friend lost her battle. I was paralyzed when I heard the news. Her battle was so short...this was her second battle. My thoughts turned to her family; husband, daughter and son. What can one do to help them at this horrible time?

Then I thought of my own daughter at school. She had not heard the news. I knew it was only a matter of time before she heard. With technology today word spreads so quickly. This was not the kind of thing you text her. This was her friend's mom and at 15 it is hard to grasp the reality of the situation.

I had a game plan. Wait until lunch time and then I could tell her. I only had to wait until 10:30 that morning. Surely she wouldn't find out before then. At about 9:30ish I got a text. Oh, no!! How could this be? Yes, it had happened.

A loving, caring person text my daughter to see how she was coping with the news. Problem...she didn't know! Well, she soon did. Tears streaming down my daughters face, she walked into seminary. There was no better place for her at this moment.

As she sat in her seat coping with emotion and the devastating news, the class got ready to begin. The spirit promptly began whispering to my daughter that she needed to share this story. She sat there and at first resisted and ignored the promptings. It wasn't long before she could ignore those promptings any longer. She raised her hand and asked if she could share something. Of course, replied the teacher.

My daughter shared the beautiful story of a loving mom and family. Her brief second battle and how quickly she lost. Leaving her sweet family behind to grieve, mourn and trying to move on. This family is not of our faith. Our faith believes in eternal families and that we will be reunited again someday. This story brought the class to a discussion on the plan of salvation, some gospel principles and how fortunate we are to have the knowledge we have.

How grateful I am for a seminary teacher who let my daughter share and who helped her come to terms with a sad event. She couldn't have been in a better place. At the end of that class, the teacher told my daughter that he had prayed that day that someone would have something to share that could start a class discussion. The spirit is amazing! Prayers were answered on both sides!

There are tender mercies occurring around us each day. Are we aware? Do we listen to the promptings, so that those tender mercies can happen? I am thankful for the gospel in my life. As hard as this situation is...my faith, knowledge of eternal families and love of the gospel gives such great comfort. Not only for me, but also for my children.

Life is so delicate, fragile and precious. We never know when our path will take a twist and turn. Recently I found out that a friend and her family had received horrible news. News that changes your life. Today I found out that my friend is losing her battle. As I absorb this and think of her family...she has 2 teenage kids. My heart breaks for them and what they are enduring. Then, I reflect on when did I last see her? I should have done a better job at keeping in touch, I certainly didn't do my best at being a friend. I let life get in the way.

As I ponder the "I should have," "I could have," and the "why didn't I," I get ashamed at my lack of being a "TRUE" friend. It is so easy to let LIFE take over and push things to the side. Laundry will always be there, the dirty floor will still be there and most definitely the grimy bathrooms will still be waiting. But, friends are not always there. Boy, did I miss out on some great memories and times.

In January I picked "I Can do Hard Things" to focus on this year. And let me tell you, I have had plenty of "hard things" to tackle and overcome. Amazing how life works that way. I have had physical, emotional, spiritual and character building opportunities. I am grateful for each of them, as I have grown and learned through doing them.

Now as the year is quickly coming to an end, I have decided that I need to do a few more "hard things." I need to serve more, I need to put aside the "To Do" list and talk to a friend, I need to make more contact with family and friends near and far. The thing is, if I don't make an effort than who will? Someone has to take the first step and I missed opportunities with my friend. I don't want that to happen with anyone else.

When you look at the big picture what really matters and what can you take with you? The clean house is not a priority and it can't go with you. Family, friends and relationships are what matters. I need to set the example for my kids to follow. I hope to be more thoughtful, observant, caring and considerate. So that my family and friends will know that I am there for them.

A while ago I went into Alec's room after he had gone to school.

Propped up on his bed was his journal.

It contained a freshly written entry and was left open.

I did as any mother would do...read the entry.

This was not a loving entry.

Alec explained how he was a good kid, how he had waited

for a year and a half for a certain video game and how

we still were not allowing him to get it.

He was even willing to use his own money.

It is great that he can express himself and point out all the

reasons why he should be able to get the video game.

I love it when kids can reason and fight their own defense.

The hard part is being the parent and making the hard decisions

and sticking to them.

She Did It!!

Wednesday was a "BIG" day!

Jensen got her permit to drive!!

Congrats!!

It was a tough road for Jens.

On Tuesday she failed the test and was

completely heart-broken.

She studied real hard and went back

on Wednesday for a 2nd time.

This time it was complete success.

Oh, how I wished it looked like this.

But, I will settle for this.

At last the temperatures have cooled.

Driving with the windows down, sunroof open, music blasting

and kids singing along.

This is what we have longed for and how

I love having the doors open and the fresh air coming in,

being able to go running outside without dieing of heat

and the beautiful thought that the AC will be done running

in a short time.

Cinnamon Rolls

These Cinnamon Rolls do not disappoint. They are fabulous. Two years ago I came across this recipe from Sisters Cafe. I make these for all sorts of gatherings and functions, I take them to family and friends at the Holidays and at least once a month we make and eat them.

2 c. milk

2 cubes butter

2 pkg yeast (4 1/2 tsp.)

1/3 c. warm water

1 1/3 c. sugar

1 tsp. salt

4 beaten eggs

8 c. flour

Filling: 1 cube softened butter and cinnamon and sugar

Heat milk and 2 squares of butter together until butter is melted. Cool and set aside. Mix yeast and warm water; let stand 5 minutes. Add cooled milk, 1 1/3 c. sugar, 1 tsp. salt, 4 beaten eggs. Add 4 c. flour and mix and gradually add 4 additional cups flour. Dough should be firm, but sticky. Cover with a cloth and put in a warm place and raise 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Dough should nearly be doubled in size. Divide dough in half and empty onto floured surface and knead a little. Roll dough into rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. To this half of dough, spread on 1/2 square of softened butter, completely covering dough. Then sprinkle a coating of sugar over entire piece of dough. Then a layer of cinnamon. Be generous with the cinnamon; this is what makes it tasty. Roll into a long roll. Pinch edges together and slice with dental floss. Place on a cookie sheet covered with a silpt or parchment paper. Do the same thing to the second half of dough. Cover with a clean dishtowel and put in a warm place, free of drafts for 2 to 5 hours to raise - they should double in size. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes or until barely browned. Remove from oven and let set for 5 minutes. Drizzle with glaze while still warm. Makes 3 - 4 dozen.

Butter Cream Glaze:

1 cube softened butter

1 tsp. vanilla

dash of salt

dash of cream of tarter

1 1/2 lbs of powdered sugar

scalded milk or cream

Add all together...adding milk a little at a time, alternately with the powdered sugar until desired consistency is reached. For cinnamon rolls, it needs to be a little thinner than regular icing.

Salsa

This is by far the best and easiest salsa around.

I have my good friend Stephanie to thank for this fabulous recipe.

It is delicious!

Ingredients:
1 Serrano Pepper
4 Vine Tomatoes (more if using Roma)
1 Bunch Cilantro
Juice of 1 Lime
2 Clove of Garlic (whole-just toss it in)
4 Green onions (more of the white than the green)
1 14.5 oz can Diced Tomatoes
2 TBL Kosher Salt

Add all of the above ingredients to a blender or food processor and blend.Add 1/2 to 1 more Serrano Pepper if needed after tasting. Add more salt if necessary too. Refrigerate before serving.

With our busy schedules this summer our only time to get away as a family was the fourth of July weekend. So, we loaded the car, grabbed Jenna and hit the road for California.

The kids and I had never been to Santa Barbara and Scott wanted us to see how beautiful it is. Scott found a hotel between Malibu and Santa Barbara. We stayed in Agoura Hills right at the start of the Malibu Canyon. The weather was 60-70. Santa Barbara was a little chilly and windy.

They were not sure they wanted to get wet.

doing a little deep cleaning, playing games, relaxing and enjoying one another.

It is hard to believe that 10 years ago Alec was born. I spent the last 3 months of the pregnancy on bed rest, several trips to stay in the hospital, weekly Dr visits and great family that came and helped us out. Alec was to be born by a routine, scheduled c-section, but nothing about this kid was routine. The surgical center was running 2 hours behind schedule and it is not easy waiting when you are ready to deliver.

Alec was born a month premature. They had held off the labor for 3 months and felt good about delivering him. When Alec was born he was not breathing well on his own. He was rushed to the NICU.

It was miracle that we were having Alec. All the Dr's had told us that after Jensen we wouldn't have anymore kids. And here we were having a baby and a boy no less!

Alec spent a week in the NICU. He went under an oxygen tent, had a ventilator put in and had the best nurses and Dr's. We are so thankful for the medical community and all that can be done. Alec was a fighter from the get go. Twice he pulled the ventilator tube out of his throat while under a sleep induced coma.

We are so blessed to have Alec in our family. He is a special boy! Happy 10th Birthday!! Here is what we love about Alec:

Alec had the most amazing Kindergarten teacher.

She shared the best idea with us.

Starting in Kindergarten we purchased this book.

At the end of each school year I have his teacher(s) write

to Alec in his book.

I will give the book to Alec at his High School graduation.

The story has a great message and it is so fun to look

back and remember his teachers.

I also gave this book to the graduating youth in our ward.

April is a crazy month at our house. Well, not the whole month, but

the first 12 days are jam packed. In the first 12 days of April,

we have 3 birthday's and Easter.

It is non-stop partying at this house.

The kids wore their Easter outfits the week

before Easter.

Alec and his friend Cole did the Easter egg coloring.

They had a great time!

Kenzie's birthday came right on the heels of Easter this year.

Jenna came and decorated her car.

Today Jensen is 15! WOW!! Fifteen years ago yesterday my doctor informed Scott and I that Jensen was coming. The problem was I had no contractions, I was not in labor. She was trying to come whether I was ready or not. The funny thing is she was scheduled for a c-section in 2 weeks. No way was she going to wait that long. Scott and I decided that it would be best for Jensen to have her own birthday. This was all happening on my birthday and we made the decision to have her the next day.

I now realize that it would probably have been easier to have us share our birthdays. Hindsight is fabulous. Here is a little insight into Jensen at 15.

*LOVES to dance...she lives to dance. She has danced since she was 3. She dances at school, in her ballet company and around the house.

Man, where does the time go? Seventeen years ago I was induced and spent the next 12 hours in labor...with no luck. Yep, this girl was stubborn from the get go. At 8:43 PM that night she was born via c-section. Scott and the Doctor were none too happy...just happened to be NCAA Championship Basketball game. And yet here we are again.

Easter Treat

These are super easy Easter Treats courtesy of Picky-Palate.

I made a bunch for teachers, visiting teachers and

home teaching families.

They make such a cute presentation

for Easter.
Here is what you need:
Oreo's (i used double stuff)
Wilton Chocolate melts
Sprinkles
Melt the chocolate according to directions.
I had pink chocolate and then I used yellow food coloring for the
white chocolate. You can do any colors. The possibilities are endless.
Then you dip the top half in chocolate or spread the chocolate on the top half.
Top with sprinkles and VIOLA!!
The cutest, yummiest, easiest treat.

Spring Break

We took a family road trip for Spring Break. I needed a get away and was dieing to go skiing. Off we went to Utah. This was the weather the first couple of days.

- and the long drive....oh, ya...Scott getting a speeding ticket on the way home just outside of Page. Big Bummer!

It was a great Spring Break and a much needed getaway. Now it is back to reality.

Well, here we are with Spring Break upon us. I thought I would take a moment and list some great ideas for Spring Break. The possibilities are endless.

Declutter the house....kids closet's and clothes, pantry, garage, anywhere that is a dumping ground. If you don't need it, use it or want it; just TOSS IT! Make piles to donate, garage sale, garbage, etc... Maybe you take one area each day to work on. Your house will look amazing at the end of the week.

Organize...I personally LOVE this. Perhaps the pantry shelves need some work, kitchen cupboards, drawers, kids toys, rooms. Find a system that works for you. For example; I line up my can goods in rows in the pantry. They are easy to see and find. Toys are kept in plastic tubs, red bins or cubbies depending on which room they are in. Each dresser drawer is for one clothing type; pants, shorts, Tshirts, and underwear and socks go together. Easier for my kids to get things back in their proper places.

Yard Work...beautify the yard. Plant flowers, a garden, get rid of the enormous amount of weeds. This is great to do as a family.

Road Trip...great family bonding if you decide to hit the road. Perhaps you are seeing family, taking a short jaunt to California, seeing a new area or just checking out Arizona. So much fun to be had with the family on the road. I LOVE road trips with the family!

Local Fun...Perhaps you are staying home and taking in the fantastic weather that Arizona will be having. You could see a movie, go to the Grand Canyon, go skiing, Ice Skating, Basketball, chilly swim in your pool, Barbeque, backyard movie and smores, hiking, Kartchner Caverns, golfing, bike rides or a fun game night.

Deep Cleaning...Think of all those endless areas in the house that don't always get a little TLC. Blinds, cleaning the carpets, baseboards, light fixtures, ceiling fans, scrub the walls, light switches, dusty niches, windows (in and out). I am tired thinking about it, but if the kids help you and you do a little each day, your house will SPARKLE!

Home Improvement Project...paint a room or two, paint the cupboards, redecorate a room, rearrange a room, redo the tile, new baseboards, new faucet, new light fixture, new door knobs, hang some shelving for more storage or work on your landscaping.

Spring is in the air! Whatever your plans are, I hope you have a FABULOUS Spring Break. Enjoy your kids and the week of no schedules, no homework and unlimited bonding time. I know I will! :)

Yesterday I sat in my sweats, watching sad movies, feeling the weight of my trial and eating cookie dough. I was not able to function. This trial was taking everything out of me and the weight was becoming unbearable. I had said countless prayers and was waiting for my answer in how to proceed forward.

I started reflecting. I wonder if the Savior felt like this at times, although I am sure his pain was much greater than mine. The Savior endured so much for each of us. I can not imagine all that he burdened. I am so grateful for all he did on my behalf.

As I sat pondering these thoughts it came! The spirit spoke to me loud and clear. It was not a whisper. It was a strong, loud, clear voice... ASK FOR FORGIVENESS.

It was going to take get strength on my part. I was going to need help. This would be one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. I did know that with the Savior by my side I would be able to accomplish this.

In life we look for the right and the wrong, but there is not always a right and a wrong. So then what do we do?

It is inevitable that through our life we may offend someone and we most likely do not mean to offend and we may not even be aware that it has occurred. In YW's we talked about being a peacemaker. If you truly intend to be a peacemaker, you must be willing to take the high road, apologize and ask for forgiveness. That is not always easy.

I never meant to offend. It seems that somewhere along the way I did. So, I mustered up all my courage and strength. I baked some beautiful loaves of homemade bread (a little comfort food.) And off I went.

I will not sugar coat this...saying "I am sorry" and asking for forgiveness is not always an easy task. There were some that I needed to make amends with. With the Savior by my side I knew I would be able to do this. I was so nervous and sick inside.

I felt so much better once I had asked for forgiveness and apologized. The weight was lifted off my shoulders. I was lighter and free. It is such a great feeling. I know that I have done my part. It is up to the others to forgive and forget.

What did I learn....communication is so very important, there is not always a right or a wrong, we should not try to lay blame on someone and saying "I am sorry" is so freeing. Prayer guided me step by step. I am so grateful for the power of prayer and the companionship of the Holy Ghost.

This just proves that my word for the year...."I Can Do" is so fitting. I Can Do!! I endured, learned, leaned on great friends, had wise counsel and connected with my Heavenly Father.

Influence is all around us...good or bad. It is up to us to filter and decide what is right or wrong. It is always easier when you surround yourself with good influences.

I am so grateful for the good influences in my life. I have such an incredible group of women that are my good influences. They are amazing examples to me, pillars of strength, strong in the gospel and grounded in life.

Satan works so hard on each of us. Trials, discouragement, disappointment, etc... When you feel these, it is Satan hard at work.

My life has been full of these lately. It has taken me quite some time to put my thoughts down. Satan is working very hard on me right now. Along with the above mentioned, he has also brought anger, frustration, contention, self-doubt and countless tears.

Through it all, I have one constant....."PRAYER." I have found myself in prayer a lot lately. That is where I find peace, comfort, strength and assurance. Prayer is simply amazing!

I know I am here to learn, be tried and endure. I am profoundly grateful for the communication that I can have with my Heavenly Father. He knows me better than anyone and therefore can uplift me when life gets extremely difficult.

We only get one shot at this life. What you put into it is what you will get out of it. Life is too short and precious to have negative influences surrounding you. At some point the negativity seeps in to your life and others around you. It is a poison that slowly erodes away at everything.

As I endure this trial I know that I am not alone. Prayer will comfort me and bring peace, my numerous good influences will continue to buoy me up and I will make it through this difficult time. There are lessons to be learned and blessings to receive.

What a week!

It started Monday with the YW Camp Fundraiser.

We hold a Ward Family Home Evening with

dinner, dessert and lesson.

It is always well attended and the

ward is so generous.

Boy, was I glad Monday night when that was over.

A lot of work, but so fun for the ward.

It shows how far he has come in basketball this year.

Aggressive and committed 100% to getting the ball.

Although he got a foul, I LOVED it!

It seems we have been on the rollercoaster called....Doctor visits. This ride goes back to October. Kenzie and Alec both had little surgeries. Then we became regulars at the doctor's office and Urgent care.

Alec has had strep 3 times and a sinus infection since October. Scott had a sinus infection, Kenzie had respiratory problems and all this from a family that never visits the doctor.

Last Monday I had Alec at the doctor getting diagnosed with strep for the 3rd time and now today I had Jensen home and we made a little trip to Urgent Care. She is now on antibiotics for sinus infection and an ear infection.

I was always so proud at how healthy we were. What gives this winter????

I now know where all my extra spending money has gone...copays and antibiotics.

It is time for this family to be healthy again. Enough already!

New Family Room Decor

Now, this is not your usual family room decor. A month ago we bought a spinning bike for the home. We put it together and it has stayed in the same place for a month. The plan was to take the bike upstairs with the rest of the workout equipment. HMMMM.

This kid LIVES on this bike. He no longer sits in a chair or on the couch. Every free minute is spent on the bike pedaling. I mean EVERY minute!

Here he is this morning after breakfast before school. On the bike.

Look at that face. He is serious and I love the fact that he is barefoot and flipped the pedal over not to use the cage.

I think it is great how much exercise the kid is getting, but is there ever too much? There is also the fact that I think this bike is quite the eyesore in my family room. What to do?

Perhaps he is the next Lance Armstrong!!

On another note I have to document a HUGE accomplishment for me. In September I injured my back and had to stop running. Running was a part of my life, it was an early morning ritual. Well, here we are the middle of February and I still had not been able to run. Until....this morning. I have been feeling great! Pain free and yoga has done so much good for my back and overall body.

I decided to test the streets again. I went for a 3 mile run. That may not seem long to some of you, but this morning it felt like a marathon. Indeed I was much slower, but I found my groove and I was able to run 3 miles. YIPPEEEE!!! I wanted to jump up and down and shout. It had been 4 1/2 months since I had been able to do this.

The back felt great! No pain what so ever and it was fabulous to hit the pavement with my IPOD in my ears. It had been way too long.

Yoga has strengthened my back and is now a part of my exercise routine. I am addicted!! And now I am able to put running back into the routine. I am one happy lady!

The last month we have been full swing into WHAM basketball. Alec loves it! He is learning a lot, having fun and making new friends.

This year the games have gotten pretty physical and aggressive. Alec is not an aggressive boy, so it has been interesting to see him try and figure out his role on the court.

Saturday he made a couple of shots, YEAH! He is learning to set screens, guard two boys and keep his eye on the ball at all times.

Scott has been great to come home and help him with some pointers and tips. They even go over to the church to play together.

This is one of my new favorite traditions. Thank you Shawni.

This year the kids really got into writing a personal and special message on each heart. They really opened up and expressed themselves.

Kenzie thanked me for our open relationship, Jensen thanked Kenzie for letting her tag along with her and her friends, Alec thanked everyone for playing with him and as parents we put what we love about each of our children.

They are beautiful messages and I love reading them several times a day. This was a great family night activity.

Like most families, we are busy, going in different directions and trying to have precious family time. As a new year has started and we have changes up ahead, I wanted to record what is happening in our home right now.

*Mackenzie accepted to BYU-I, awaiting news from BYU. She doesn't know if she is staying for community college for the 1st year or going away.

*Mackenzie now teaches Alec piano. Every Sunday morning he has a lesson. I love seeing the two of them working together at the piano.

*Alec is playing WHAM basketball, plays the piano and loves Scouts. Brother and Sister Muehlmann are fabulous.

*Jensen still lives to dance. After 4 months of Nutcracker, mid-January brought Cinderella rehearsals. She is a stepsister and thrilled to death with the part.

*Jensen is learning to drive at the church parking lot. She is very nervous with driving a car.

*Mackenzie has some great friends...Jenna and Amanda.

*Alec enjoys having friends over, Cole and Drew are the usual ones. Bernardo is his good friend at school.

*4th grade has brought many new challenges for Alec. He loves ALP, is pretty responsible and is totally a boy (gets distracted easily).

*Kenzie and I go to yoga several times a week.

*The family loves the spinning bike we purchased. I just want it out of the family room.

*Being YW's President is keeping me really busy.

*We are blessed..good kids, healthy family, great friends, great life and so many more blessings.

*Monday's are our one night we are home together, that is after Kenzie and I return from yoga.

*The weeks are full of dance, yoga, basketball, scouts, YW's, Scott's basketball, meetings, book club, homework, piano and whatever else trickles in.

*Scott has been at his job the longest ever. This is a record!

*Alec loves to play games.

*Jensen is too busy for a social life.

*Mackenzie lives for her "friend" time.

*Scott and I watch "24" with the girls, Alec loves "Biggest Loser", we all love "Glee" and the weekends are usually a fight for the family room TV.

So, this is our life....
